Kitsap Pumas win Roughneck Cup
Bremerton, WA- The Kitsap Pumas repeated as the Roughneck Cup Champions in a 3-3 tie with the Sounders U-23’s in their last match of the season. A lot was at stake as the two teams faced off. The Pumas needed a tie or a win to repeat as champions, and the Sounders needed a win to take the cup. The game was more than anyone could have asked for.
In front of nearly one thousand fans, the two teams played down to the wire to decide the fate of Puget Sound based title. The Pumas opened up the scoring in the 8th minute with Sebastiaan Jansen beating the keeper. They would go into the half leading 1-0.
The Sounders would not go down with out a fight. They took control of the game with two consecutive goals in the 61st and 67th minutes. That is when things began to get interesting. The game really began to get physical, the emotions began to flair up, and the cards started to fly.
In the 71st defender Cody Shelton and Sounder Aaron Kovar were ejected from the match leaving the teams to play with 10 men. Just a few minutes later captain Neil Shaffer was ejected after coming to the defense of one of his men as a Sounder player cleated a Kasy Kiarash while on the ground.
With the Sounders still up, the Pumas pushed hard to level the score and it happened in the 79th when Ben Truax was able to stuff a rebound in from an Alex Chavez attempt.
In the 90th minute defender Brandon Scott broke free for a one on one with keeper Earl Edwards and scored what looked to be the winning goal and the one that would seal the Roughneck Cup for Kitsap. Yet again the Sounders were able to respond with a goal of their own. The closing minutes were frantic, with each team trying to find that elusive winning goal but were turned away boy crossbars and goalies.
In the end, it all ended in a draw which really meant a loss for the Sounders and a victory for the Pumas as they brought home the hardware. While eliminated from the playoffs, the Pumas proved to be the best in their home region. It was a great way to cap off the year!
