Kitsap Pumas win 3-1 over North Sound

Kitsap Pumas go on top for Roughneck Cup with victory

Bremerton, WA- The Kitsap Pumas downed the North Sound SeaWolves with a 3-1 victory. The Pumas are leading the race for the Roughneck Cup with one final match against their rival U-23 Sounders on July 13th.

It was free tacos for everyone as the Pumas scored 3 goals in a match for the first time at home this season. Kitsap pushed hard for goals all game, really putting pressure on the SeaWolves keeper Dylan Faber.

The Pumas thought they had taken the early lead when Kasy Kiarash put a ball in the back of the net off of a corner kick in the 10th minute but was called back when a foul was called in the box. They did finally break through in the 26th minute when Kyle Johnson beat the keeper at point-blank range on a cross from Alex Chavez.

It is said that you are most likely to give up a goal right after scoring one, and that proved to be true.  Just minutes later, North Sound scored an equalizing header off of a free kick that just beat Tony Haltermann. The level score didn’t last even two minutes as Cody Shelton (the man with the club for a hand) scored a header off of a corner from Andrew Stirling. That proved to be the deciding goal.

The Pumas continued to mount pressure and hold onto the bulk of possession as the match continued. They added an insurance goal when Alex Chaves scored in the 81st minute with an assist going to Shane Malcom.

Kitsap not only pushed for lots of goals, but they also played stingy defense, turning away the North Sound SeaWolves over and over again early in the midfield. The backbone of Zac Sampson , Cody Shelton and defensive midfielder Nuno Gourgel stood tall and rarely let the SeaWolves do much up the middle.

The team has seemed to start to gel and play more confidently late in the season. Next week’s test against the Sounders U-23’s will see if they can bring home some hardware. Join the Pumas early at Gordon Field on July 13th as they face off against their rivals for rights to the Roughneck Cup.
