Kitsap Pumas Vs. U-23 Sounders

Early season test of courage.

Kitsap Pumas faced off against the U-23 Sounders on a rainy evening at Curtis High School. With both teams coming into this match with 2 losses early in the season, you could say that it was a “must” win for both of them. A good sized crowd was there to support their respective teams while chants continually echoed through the air. The night was a long, grueling, and physical affair with multiple cards being handed out. Each team desperately needed the points and it showed on the pitch tonight. In the end neither team walked away the victor, but one team showed its courage in an epic comeback.

The night started out grim for the Kitsap Pumas as the Sounders quickly jumped out in front. The Sounders had all but taken the wind out of the Pumas sails and the Kitsap supports were in disbelief. Frustration mounted as the Pumas fell to a 3-0 deficit in the first half and emotion was taking over as the Pumas continually committed rough fouls.

Down 3-0 to start the second half, the Pumas began the task of chipping away at what seemed an insurmountable deficit. Kitsap scored its first goal of the night on a flick on header that squeaked by Sounders goal keeper Zac Lubin. The second came from a scrappy play from forward #14 Sebastiaan Jansen who stay with a rebound deep in the box and slid it past the keeper.

The Kitsap Pumas completed their comeback when #23 Shane Malcom was tripped up in the box which lead to a PK goal by #8 Neil Shaffer with only minutes left in the match. The stunned Sounders crowed which had taunted so mightily early in the match had been quieted.

After going down 3-0 early the match the Pumas didn’t lay down. They didn’t give up. The hung around and showed the courage to continue the attack and score some goals. It looked like it was going to be a long match for the boys in hoops, but they showed tonight that they are never out of it!
