Kitsap Pumas: Portland Timbers U-23 part deux
The second of 3 meetings between the two clubs
Bremerton, Wa- For the second time in a span of three weeks, the Kitsap Pumas faced off against the division leading Portland Timbers FC U-23 squad. It was also the second time that the two teams fought to a draw.
Just several weeks ago the Portland Timbers made the trip north for the Pumas inaugural game at Gordon Field, which was played in front of almost 700 fans. The Pumas played the Timbers to a draw, which would be the first blemish on their record. Early in this evenings match, it looked like it was the Pumas who would come out on top.
Striking early in the match in the 14th minute, #8 Neil Shaffer put a header past the keeper on an assist from #14 Sebastiaan Jansen. As the match progressed both sides were continually unhappy with the officiating going on on the pitch. A totally of 7 yellow cards were handed out as a result of the chippy atmosphere.
Shaffer would finish his brace when the Pumas were awarded a penalty kick in the 57th minute. The Pumas lead would not stand long. Down by two goals the Timbers showed why they are leaders in the league. Within a span of less than 20 minutes the game was put back to level terms. Saad Abdul-Salaam headed a ball off the cross-bar and into the back of the net in the 60th minute and Mark Sherrod scored the equalizer in the 65th.
Both teams pushed to score in the waning minutes of the match with the best chancing going to the pumas #10 Alex Chavez who looked to have beaten his man and chipped a shot in past the Portland keeper, but was called back for off sides.
The newly acquired Ben Truax, who comes back to the Pumas on loan, didn’t get much of a chance to make an impact when he was subbed in late into the half after Portland had already dealt their blows.
Portland finishes the night with a 5-1-2 record which puts then on top of the division. The two ties came at the hands of the Pumas. The Pumas finish the night with a 1-2-5 record. They are leading the league in ties and will be looking to go on a string of wins if they want to play late into the year.
The two teams will face off once again Friday June 21st down in Portland. It will be the 3rd meeting for the two teams in a span of 4 weeks.
